“Can’t I automate my public Wi-Fi security settings?”

Absolutely, Gary. This one’s going to be pretty simple so let’s give you the rundown on how to set up your security settings to automatically keep your computer that little bit more secure when connecting to a public network. Remember, the harder you make it for less scrupulous individuals to gain access, the less likely they are to try.

On windows when you first attempt to connect to a new network, Windows will pop up with a message that asks you what type of network you are connecting to. These should be; Home/Private or Public/Open.

These have their own set of pre-set settings and it’s pretty simple to just click Home or Public, right? Good. To customise these, go to your control panel and click through to your Network and Sharing Centre, then advanced settings.

Here you can turn on and off all settings associated with the network profiles. So, for the public one you want to turn off network discovery, network sharing, file sharing, public folder/media sharing, media streaming and any other option that looks like it may give somebody the potential to access your device.
It’s worth noting however that this is just one line of defence. Running a third-party firewall or a robust up to date anti-malware product in tandem with using the security settings above will keep you more secure in the long run.

“Why bother with this stuff? Do I need to care about my privacy online?”
