GFAQ - What are the main components of computer hardware?

Welcome to the 13th edition of Gary's frequently asked questions. With permission from Gary, we've created a series of answers to some of the most common problems in the IT industry that Gary has asked us for help with over the time we've been his IT consultant. We'll take it from here, thanks, Gary.

“What are the main components of computer hardware?”

Well, computer hardware is pretty diverse, but the general components that are the same across most computers are simple enough. A typical computer system consists of a case, a power supply, central processing unit, a motherboard, main memory (also known as RAM) a graphics card and a hard disk drive. You can also swap a standard hard disk drive for what’s called a solid state drive to decrease load times and improve system startup.

These are then combined with input devices such as a keyboard, mouse, microphone, video camera and image scanner which allow you to interact with the computer system. To see what's going on, however, you also need output devices such as a monitor, speakers and a printer.

So, when you are looking to upgrade a computer, if its a desktop you can swap out components and change things around to get more performance and keep up to date. This allows you to keep the same hardware for long periods of time whereas with a laptop you can very rarely change the components and as such have to buy a newer model when you need more computer power and performance.
