“How old is cloud technology?”

Well Gary, cloud technology is regarded as new and innovative to most people. To answer the question we first need to understand cloud technology.

Cloud technology refers to more than just one system. Cloud computing, for example, is shared pools of computer networks making use of virtualization to perform tasks. This is different to cloud storage which is a model of computer data storage over computer networks, often used for backing up data (cloud backup) and data backup recovery.

The concept of cloud technology has been around since the 1960’s when the idea of an ‘intergalactic’ computer network was introduced by a man called JCR Licklider, who was responsible for enabling the development of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in 1969.  At the same time, another computer scientist, John McCarthy, proposed the idea of computation being delivered as a public utility. While experts debate as to whom to attribute the concept of cloud technology’s creation to, it is certain that it all began in the 1960’s.

For many businesses of the world it is no longer a question of whether or not cloud technology is something they should be using, but one of how quickly can it be implemented. This is because cloud computing and cloud storage save time and money by moving a lot of the IT infrastructure off-site and into third-party management (sometimes called ‘Infrastructure as a Service‘ or ‘Cloud Infrastructure‘). It allows a company to contract a third party provider of IT services such as AAG to handle and maintain all of their IT services for them instead of hiring an internal IT support team.
